🗣 A protocol was issued to Koval for speaking Russian at the session

⚖️ An administrative protocol was drawn up against acting Odesa mayor Ihor Koval because he spoke Russian during the city council session on 8 July, the representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Anna Nerush, reported.

🕯 At the start of the meeting, the father of the fallen 23-year-old Hero of Ukraine Ostap Makarov (“Makar”) presented the city with a copy of the Order of the Gold Star and addressed the deputies in Russian. The city council failed to provide a translation of the speech into Ukrainian, which violates Article 12 of the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language.”

🏛 The mayor’s office stated that Koval personally asked the speaker to speak Ukrainian and that the speech itself was personal and memorial in nature. Despite this, the language commissioner recorded a violation on the part of the presiding official at the session.

💬 “First and foremost, the Odesa City Council should have ensured that the speech was in Ukrainian. And if that was not possible — provided a translation,” Nerush said. According to her, this is not about the “language of patriotism,” but about failing to comply with the requirements of the law.

🔥 MP Oleksiy Honcharenko criticized the actions of the commissioner, calling what happened “absolute nonsense.”

🚓 Previously, commissioner Olena Ivanovska appealed to the SBU and HUR over staff speaking Russian during a shootout on 2 September, and also stated that parents who communicate in Russian in school chats would be fined.
