Finnish President Alexander Stubb, together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre 27 in October held a phone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that lasted about an hour and a half. The leader shared details.

Key allies were informed about the call in advance, including all the countries of the Nordic Council, and after it ended they were briefed on its content. After the conversation, he said, President Zelensky was given an approximately 30-minute report on how it went.

“We discussed the key issues and the messages that we had agreed on the previous evening before the call,” Stubb said. He described the nature of the conversation like this: “The conversation with President Putin was professional and direct.”

In addition, the leader explained the necessity of the call.

“Prime Minister Støre and I felt it was important for border states, such as Finland and Norway, to clarify issues that could lead to misunderstandings. And also to deliver direct messages to the President of the Russian Federation from the perspective of the Northern European countries, in particular Finland and Norway,” he said.

Stubb added that Finland and Norway will continue to support Ukraine and work toward achieving a lasting and just peace.

“A path has now been cleared for a meeting involving the United States, Ukraine, Russia, and European countries, which will take place in Abu Dhabi in November,” Stubb added.
