Corruption in imports is costing Ukraine’s budget billions

Corruption in imports is costing the budget billions. According to customs data, total trade turnover for 7 months reached 82,2 billion dollars. Imports of goods amounted to 58,1 billion dollars, while exports of goods were only 24,1 billion dollars.

Trade deficit: the negative balance reached 34 billion dollars (imports exceed exports by 2,4 times). The huge deficit is partly fueled by “technical” imports, which artificially inflate the value of imported goods to transfer currency abroad. This creates a persistent shortage of foreign currency on the interbank market and puts pressure on the hryvnia exchange rate. Because of the activities of “technical” companies and gray schemes, the budget loses billions of hryvnias in domestic revenues, which deepens the country’s dependence on international aid.
