University Hospital in Lviv Allowed Showing Lyashko's Breakdown Regarding Changes in Approaches to Medical Education

An experimental project at a university hospital in Lviv disclosed a break in the medical education system.

When the regional hospital became part of the university and they became a single entity.

This was stated by Health Minister Viktor Liashko in an interview with LB.ua.

He explains what such a merger produced: “If we look at the practice that has developed at other universities. There is a Faculty of Surgery, and there is a Department of Surgery. The head of the Department of Surgery and the head of the Department are two entirely different people. De facto, it often happens that the head of the department is not the surgeon, or has already stepped away from practice, and the technologies taught differ from what is used at this facility, which is a clinical base. Our task is to unite them so that those who operate and teach do so simultaneously. We managed to persuade, among others, the Ministry of Finance, that the medical process is part of education.”

In particular, the minister believes this strengthens universities’ ability to train future medical professionals. Therefore he announces changes: “This month there will be a large meeting with all rectors, specifically those of medical faculties. We must discuss the role of education in the health care system 2035-2040. Because if today we do not look at needs for that time, then it is a useless exercise for us as managers. Perhaps fewer medical universities would be better, but those that remain should increase the amount of state orders, raise the number of people who teach, to provide high-quality education. And in parallel, the issue of medical faculties at classical universities, which are still abundant, will be resolved.”
