“Not capitulation and not treason”: France’s Speaker of the Parliament urged giving Ukraine a just peace

Peace for Ukraine must be just, approved by the Ukrainian people themselves and supported by reliable security guarantees, not imposed capitulation.

This was stated by Yaël Braun-Pivet, President of the National Assembly of France, in Paris, while opening the Summit of Heads ofParliaments of the G7 states.

“We want peace, but not any peace. We want the peace that was agreed to, not the peace to which we were forced, a peace approved by the Ukrainian people and their representatives,” Braun-Pivet said, addressing the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

According to her, such a peace “cannot be either capitulation or betrayal of the principles of international law and the UN Charter,” including sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

“We want a just peace, a lasting peace with reliable security guarantees,” the speaker emphasized.

She recalled that such guarantees were to be provided under Franco-British leadership by the Coalition of the Willing, which today unites 35 states.

Braun-Pivet also sharply condemned the latest Russian strikes against Ukraine: “How far is Russia willing to go in this horror? Nothing, absolutely nothing can justify families, children, and innocent people paying the price for this murderous madness.”

She reminded that the agreements reached at the G7 summit in Evian in June include, in particular, increasing military aid to Ukraine.

“Our goal is clear — today to defend Ukraine. Tomorrow — to help it realize its European and Euro-Atlantic future,” Braun-Pivet summed up, closing the Ukrainian part of her speech with the words “Glory to Ukraine!”.
