Some Ukrainian coins can be worth tens or hundreds of times more than their face value. Collectors are most interested in rare issues and certain varieties of 25 kopecks and 1 hryvnia.

One of the expensive specimens is considered to be the 1 hryvnia of 1995. Such coins were struck in a small mintage, and their price today depends heavily on the specific variety, condition, and striking details.

The most common variants in circulation are 1AB1.1 and 1AB1.2. They differ, in particular, by the thickness of the inscription on the coin’s edge.

Much more expensive can be rare varieties. For example, the 1BAg coin with a smooth edge is estimated at approximately 7–9 thousand hryvnias, and certain variants of the 1 hryvnia of 1995 can cost up to 16 thousand hryvnias.

Collectors are also interested in the 25 kopecks of 2004. Part of these coins were produced for a special annual set by the NBU in a small mintage of about 5 thousand pieces.

At one numismatic auction such a coin was offered for more than 2,4 thousand hryvnias, while the quick-sale price was 3,5 thousand hryvnias. Its value is linked to the small mintage and better striking quality.

At the same time, the year of issue alone does not make a coin valuable. Price is determined by the specific die, edge, striking characteristics, preservation, and demand among collectors.

Therefore, before selling an old coin it is worth carefully comparing it with descriptions of the varieties or showing it to a specialist. Externally almost identical specimens can differ in price by several times.
