Putin's Office Made a Statement on Resuming Negotiations with Ukraine and the USA — "We'll Make Another Attempt"

Russia 21 in September said it expected to return to trilateral negotiations with Ukraine and the United States. At the same time, there has been no movement in this direction at present. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian dictator.

The statement by the Kremlin spokesman was reported by the Russian publication TASS. According to Peskov, Moscow still hopes to return to consultations in a trilateral format to resolve the situation around the war against Ukraine.

"We hope that we will still be able to resume trilateral negotiations. And we will make one more attempt to achieve our goals by peaceful means," Peskov said.

At the same time, the Russian dictator's spokesman admitted that there is currently no forward movement on the settlement.

Why the negotiation process stalled

Previous rounds of trilateral talks involving the United States addressed territorial issues, security guarantees, and conditions for a possible ceasefire, but the parties did not achieve a substantial breakthrough. Moscow insists on its own terms of settlement, including recognition of control over the occupied territories and a refusal to allow any foreign military presence in Ukraine after the end of hostilities. Kyiv has repeatedly called these demands unacceptable.

The main stumbling block remains the fate of the occupied territories: Russia claims the entire Donbas, despite not being able to capture it completely after years of fighting, while Ukraine insists it will not cede any occupied land. The Ukrainian side emphasizes that final decisions on territories can only be made by the leaders of states, not by negotiators of a lower rank.

This episode of talks in the Kremlin in early September showed how slowly the process is moving despite active contacts between American mediators and both sides of the conflict.
