Ukraine agreed on $100 million for purchasing locomotives

The funds are planned to be directed toward purchasing used locomotives on foreign markets.

During the Carpathian Summit within the Carpathian Eight, a principled agreement was reached on $100 million in grant financing for the RELINC project in cooperation with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The funds are planned to be used to purchase used locomotives. This was reported by CTS on Monday, 21 September.

The Cabinet of Ministers announced the formation of an international coalition to reinforce Ukrainian railways with locomotives.

Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk noted that during the summit the Ukrainian team negotiated with partners on specific support mechanisms.

According to him, since the start of the full-scale war, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged as a result of Russian attacks, and that number continues to grow.

"Despite this, the railway continues to provide humanitarian logistics, passenger, export and import transportation, as well as connections with Europe. Therefore, we are simultaneously working on restoring and replenishing the locomotive fleet," Kalashnyk added.

Ukraine also has agreements with Slovakia on assistance in replenishing the locomotive fleet. Work is underway in parallel with other countries in the region to expand this support.

In addition, it was preliminarily agreed to allocate €130 million under the UZ Energy project for critical needs and to strengthen Ukrzaliznytsia’s energy resilience.

Earlier it became known that Russia is increasingly attacking Ukrainian passenger trains with kamikaze drones, creating a threat to the railway network.
