To run for office, military personnel will have to change not electoral but military legislation

And for soldiers to vote, it will be necessary to create frontline polling stations.

Organizing voting for servicemen is not difficult, but the right to be elected requires changes in vacation rules and in disclosure (declaration) requirements.

This was stated in an interview with LB.ua by the first deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Kornienko.

According to him, the problem of military participation in elections is overly politicized, and the subgroups of MP Roman Lozynskyi (Golo­s) together with representatives of the General Staff have already identified simple solutions.

“Military personnel who are not at the front or in the front-line zone vote where they live. There is no need to create separate polling stations. For those at the front or in the front-line zone, if we are talking about a stable ceasefire, there will be so-called frontline polling stations,” Kornienko said.

The frontline polling station idea is criticized by the opposition, but the first deputy speaker emphasizes that it concerns a limited number of people.

“But I will remind you that we are talking about several tens of thousands of soldiers who will guard the front line, not about the entire million-strong army. Several tens of kilometers from the front there will be ordinary polling stations,” he noted.

Separately, it will be necessary to regulate the issue of declaration for military candidates.

“Regarding candidacy, we should work not on electoral legislation but on military. To give the opportunity to take leaves, to adjust the rules of declaration, because we will not avoid mandatory declarations for candidates, and now soldiers may not be declaring,” Kornienko said.
