Baseboards are a problem area in many apartments. They quickly get covered with dust, stains, and dirt, and they are not cleaned as often as the rest of the home. Fortunately, a cheap and simple solution can help deal with the problem.

How to clean baseboards correctly?

The first rule of cleaning baseboards is to remove the dust. You don’t need to wet the surface, otherwise fine particles will simply turn into a dense layer of grime, which will be hard to remove. Instead, it is better to use a soft nozzle attachment for a vacuum cleaner and clean the floor especially thoroughly at the joints with the baseboards—the places where the most dust accumulates.

If you don’t have a vacuum, you can clean baseboards with a dry microfiber cloth or a brush.

For most baseboards, it will be sufficient to wipe them with a damp cloth with a small amount of dish soap. But don’t use too much water: wooden boards absorb moisture very easily, and eventually this can lead to peeling or swelling.

The fabric should be wrung out well before wiping, and after cleaning the baseboards you should wipe them dry immediately. As for plastic baseboards, you can be less careful, but it’s still better not to overdo the water.

If gray streaks or a greasy film start to appear on the baseboards—this often happens in the kitchen—you can remove it with a simple remedy found on the shelf. In a bowl of warm water, you should add not only dish soap but also half a cup of vinegar.

This solution will handle grease well and will not damage the surface. The microfiber should be wrung out well, and then gently wipe the soiled areas.

But the main secret to keeping baseboards clean and free of a dust layer is using an anti-static product. It reduces dust deposition—so after washing, treat the baseboards with it.
