Not Only in Ukraine: Ukrainian Is an Official Language in These Three Countries

It turns out that Ukrainian has official status not only in Ukraine, but also in several other countries where it is the language of a national minority. This means that it can be studied there and even used in the work of local government.

In different countries, Ukrainian has varying legal status: in some places it is recognized as a language of a national minority, somewhere it can be taught, and so on. But in no country is Ukrainian currently the official language of the entire country, TSN writes.

In which countries is Ukrainian official?

The first country to mention in this list is Croatia. There Ukrainian officially belongs to the list of territorial languages, or languages of national minorities with which education can be conducted. The state guarantees members of these minorities the opportunity to receive preschool, primary, and secondary education in their native language.

Ukrainian in Croatia is not an equal officially recognized language of any local community, but it does have the status of a minority language. In the latest Council of Europe report on the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, the right was noted to not have equal official use in any Croatian local administrative unit.

Ukrainian also has the status of a national minority language in several other European countries. This means it can be used in cultural life, education, mass media, and other areas in accordance with the laws of the respective state.

A notable example is Romania—the rights of Ukrainian-speaking citizens are protected by law. The Ukrainian community can support cultural institutions and education in the native language. In Slovakia, Ukrainian also has the status of a national minority language. There, Ukrainian cultural and educational institutions operate, and the state provides opportunities to preserve the language identity of the Ukrainian community.

In Poland, Ukrainian is traditionally used by the Ukrainian national community—and after the start of the full-scale war, the number of people speaking Ukrainian there has significantly increased. However, Ukrainian language does not have official status in this country.
