Shmyhal Discussed with the U.S. Secretary of Energy a Large-Scale Project to Build a Power Unit at Khmelnytskyi NPP

At the meeting, they also discussed energy security issues, in particular the importance of energy for all spheres of life.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting in New York with U.S. Secretary of Energy Christopher (Chris) Rait.

He said that at the meeting they discussed energy security issues, in particular the importance of energy for all areas of life. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of using diplomatic instruments to achieve an energy truce.

The conversation partners also discussed cooperation in the nuclear sector.

"We plan to jointly implement a large-scale project to construct one of the power units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant using Westinghouse technology. We see significant prospects for developing cooperation in the production of nuclear fuel components and fuel assemblies," noted Shmyhal.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine thanked the United States for allocating 174 million dollars for the restoration of energy and 100 million dollars for the restoration of the new safe confinement of the Chernobyl NPP, damaged as a result of the Russian attack.

"Ukraine highly values cooperation with American partners in the energy sphere. Strengthening energy security of Ukraine and Europe is our common priority," noted Shmyhal.

In April this year, a U.S. energy department delegation visited Kyiv and said that the United States is interested in the completion of two units at Khmelnytskyi NPP.
