A monument to Ivan Mazepa will be erected in central Kyiv

The Government of Ukraine approved the installation of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv. It will be placed on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard on the site of the dismantled monument to Volodymyr Lenin.

Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna says: "Ivan Mazepa is one of the key figures in Ukrainian history, a statesman who consistently defended Ukraine's political subjectivity and supported the development of Ukrainian culture and education." She adds: "Kyiv must honor his memory appropriately in the public space. It is important to us that the future monument be the result of an open competition, with the involvement of the professional community and compliance with all necessary procedures." In addition, it is reported that to determine the form of the future monument an open competition for the best sketch design will be held, the organization of which will be ensured by the Ministry of Culture together with the State Agency of Ukraine for Arts and Art Education and the Kyiv City State Administration.

It is noted that the Ministry of Culture will be the client for the design and production of the monument. It is summed up: "The installation of the monument and the improvement of the adjacent territory will be financed from the Kyiv budget. Funds from other sources not prohibited by law may also be attracted for the design and production of the monument. The final cost will be determined after the competition and the approval of the project and cost-estimate documentation." Previously, the fate of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Kyiv was decided.
