A Ukrainian with a knife wounded five people in Poland, one victim died

On Thursday, 24 September, an attack with a knife occurred on the grounds of a Benedictine abbey in Jasło? Yaroslavl? in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland. A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen wounded five people, one of the victims died.

According to Polish police, the report of the attack was received around 9:30. Law enforcement established that the man stabbed four men and a woman. All the wounded were taken to hospitals.

Among the injured were three priests and two civilians. Initially it was reported that three men were in a life-threatening condition. Later it became known that one of the priests died.

The attacker was detained at the scene by the police. Police are now determining the exact sequence of events and the motives for his actions. According to Polish media reports, the attack occurred shortly before a scheduled Mass.

Initially, some Polish media reported an attack directly on the grounds of a women's monastery. However, according to a representative of the Benedictine community, the attack began at a nearby Christian formation center where a cafe operated, and then the attacker moved to the church.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Poland strongly condemned the attack.

“We consider any acts of violence unacceptable. It is especially painful that such a tragedy occurred in a place that should be a space for prayer and mercy,” reads the statement from the diplomatic mission.

The embassy expressed condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and thanked the police, medical workers, and other services for their response.

Ukrainian diplomats stressed that competent authorities must establish all circumstances of the tragedy, and those responsible must be held accountable under the law. At the same time, the embassy urged not to let this tragedy become a pretext for hatred or new violence.
