The Mazepa Monument Will Be Erected Where the Lenin Monument Stood

The Cabinet of Ministers supported the proposal of the Ministry of Culture to install a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv. The monument is planned to be placed on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, where the monument to Vladimir Lenin once stood.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The appearance of the future monument will be determined as a result of an open competition. The Ministry of Culture, the State Agency of Ukraine for Art and Art Education, and the Kyiv City State Administration should jointly organize the selection of the sketch project.

The Ministry of Culture will also be the customer for the design and manufacture of the monument.

expenditures for the installation of the monument and improvement of the surrounding area are planned to be covered from the Kyiv budget. For the design and manufacture of the monument, other sources of funding may be involved, if they are not prohibited by law.

The cost of the project has not yet been determined. It will be set after the competition and approval of the design and cost documentation.

The idea to install a monument to Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv was voiced by President Volodymyr Zelensky in June 2026 year. Its implementation is also envisaged by the presidential decree of 21 August 2026 year No. 781, "On the issue of honoring the memory of Ukraine’s Hetman Ivan Mazepa."

The monument to Lenin on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard was dismantled in 8 December 2013 year during the Revolution of Dignity. On the same day, activists toppled it.

Thus, the place where the monument to the Soviet leader used to stand is planned to be used for the installation of a monument to the Ukrainian hetman.
