Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiga held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araki at the margins of the UN General Assembly session, as reported by 24 on September in H.

“Diplomacy is direct dialogue, even in difficult circumstances,” the Ukrainian foreign minister wrote. “Our conversation focused on joint steps to prevent further escalation of tensions between our countries. We agreed to maintain existing channels of communication. We also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and Europe, as well as on various directions of ongoing efforts to achieve peace. I confirmed Ukraine’s position in supporting the fastest possible restoration of peace and stability in both of our regions.”

Sibiga noted that these talks are a development of the “frank telephone conversation” that took place in July.

Araki did not comment in detail on this meeting, only noting the fact of its holding.

Iranian government agency ISNA reported that among the topics of discussion for the two ministers was an attack on ships Port Olya 2 and Begey in the Caspian Sea in July. These ships were involved in transporting military cargo from Iran and were under sanctions, but the damage led to another escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Iran, which supports Russia in the war. Araki then threatened that Kyiv’s actions “will not go unanswered.”
