Russian attacks damaged more than 1600 energy facilities of Ukraine, lost 9 GW of generation – Shmyhal

Russian attacks damaged 1613 energy facilities of Ukraine. Just last winter the country lost 9 GW of generating capacity.

As reported by Dilo, this was stated by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal during his remarks at the 81-session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He emphasized that ensuring the operation of the power system is necessary to support the country’s vital functions and economy. The goal is not only to rebuild damaged equipment, but also to build a new resilient system.

Separately, the minister reported on the work of the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund. By the end of 2026 year, they plan to attract over €400 million. The funds are to be directed toward purchasing energy equipment and repair work.

According to Shmyhal, support for energy does not only mean replacing damaged equipment, but also developing decentralized generation and other elements of the energy system.

“Support for Ukraine’s energy sector is not just about replacing damaged equipment. It is an investment in a more resilient, decentralized, efficient, and European energy system,” said the head of the ministry.

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine plans within a year to restore and build over 10 GW of energy capacity and strengthen their protection from Russian attacks.
