Journalistic investigations in Ukraine: from tens of thousands to 8 per year
2021 year YouControl team launched the "Media Reputation" module, which tracks mentions of companies and individuals in journalistic investigations and materials with signs of investigative journalism, and also helps establish connections between the protagonists of such publications. It was created so that important journalistic investigations and related data remain accessible and do not get lost over time. These are publications from more than 100 reputable media outlets, including Slidstvo..Info, Schemes: Corruption in Details, Bihus. Info, Texty.org, NGL.media, Ukrainska Pravda and others. Materials from the "Media Reputation" module are checked and structured, and publications are additionally stored in web archives. Mentions are divided into three categories: "investigation subject", "critical mention" and "mention". The status of "Investigation subject" means that the person or company is the main actor of the material. "Critical mention" means that the object is important for understanding the material and is mentioned in a negative context. Just "mention" records all other mentions of individuals and legal entities in the text.
The "Media Reputation" module is very helpful for journalists, as it significantly reduces the time spent collecting and studying the background of people and companies mentioned in the material, says Pavel Lisychnyk, coordinator of the nationwide network of media hubs of the Institute of Mass Information, MediaBase. "In addition, by studying colleagues’ work, media workers can enrich and adjust their own texts considering existing publications."
For companies and individuals, the tool is useful because it is possible in a convenient and visual format to track mentions about companies and individuals with matching full names in reputable media. If you notice an important journalistic investigation that is not yet in YouControl’s analytical system, please send it to [email protected].
YouControl specialists managed to record over 45,6 thousand journalistic investigations and materials containing signs of investigations in the "Media Reputation" module over the last 20 years. At the same time, this is not an exhaustive count of all investigations published during this period. There may be many more materials, but a significant portion of early publications appeared in newspapers and magazines and do not have digital versions that could be processed systematically. Therefore, the analysis covers the available digital corpus and reflects the dynamics of journalistic investigations in it.
Over twenty analyzed years, the peak fell on 2025 year — 8949 investigations. In 2026 year the indicator remains high: as of mid-September 2026 year, YouControl’s analytical system recorded 8494 materials. The number of materials in the YouControl module is growing annually not only due to new journalistic investigations. Media workers increasingly use individual elements of this genre in their publications. Therefore, "Media Reputation" covers a broader range of materials that help journalists find the information they need and work on their own investigations. A large part of journalistic investigations were prepared using YouControl tools. They most often relate to five areas: anti-corruption, financial transparency, verification of business partners, sanctions and restrictions, as well as judicial and criminal proceedings.
Separately, YouControl analytics also studied journalistic investigations for 2014–2026 years — the period covering Euromaidan and the Revolution of Dignity, as well as events related to the termination of Viktor Yanukovych’s powers. This period became one of the key stages of political changes in Ukraine and was accompanied by active coverage of socio-political events in journalistic investigations. The top ten figures in journalistic investigations of this period contain 1328 mentions. It is formed by representatives of big business, presidents, politicians and regional leaders. The greatest number of such mentions is attributed to Ihor Kolomoyskyi (237), Petro Poroshenko (170), Volodymyr Zelensky (155) and Hennadiy Trukhanov (116).
At the same time, in terms of the number of critical mentions they are led by: Viktor Yanukovych (364), Petro Poroshenko (135), Ihor Kolomoyskyi (115), Volodymyr Zelensky (108) and Arsen Avakov (87).
Critical mentions in investigations: 62% belong to the public sector
Among 50 legal entities that most often appear in journalistic investigations in the period 2006-2026 years, the most materials concern LLC "Rostdorstroy" (208), LLC "Automagistral South" (172) and the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine (151). Together these three structures account for 531 materials, or more than 16% of all mentions in the top 50. It is notable that over the last 12 years, the top three actors have not changed.
The largest number of critical mentions in journalistic investigations over the last 12 years belong to two legal entities: the Office of the Prosecutor General (97) and the Party of Regions (76).
What the data from investigations say about Ukrainian journalism
Analysis of journalistic investigations over the last 20 years shows three key trends: scale, regionalization, and expansion of focus.
The growth in the number of analyzed materials year by year is driven not only by more classic journalistic investigations but also by media workers more actively using individual elements of this genre. This allows adding more short texts to the "Media Reputation" module, useful for investigators.
Today, investigations are increasingly conducted not only by profile media but also by small local editorial offices that pay particular attention to local topics. The specifics of work in such editors, in particular resource and time constraints, affect the depth of coverage of certain topics. At the same time, journalists are actively developing, mastering investigative journalism tools, and creating many substantive short materials. This indicates a gradual strengthening of their ability to work on investigative topics.
The set of main heroes of materials is changing: alongside politicians and big business, state-owned companies, government bodies, law enforcement agencies, local government and infrastructure projects are increasingly in focus. Some individuals and organizations remain in the spotlight for years, because new investigations, court cases, and state decisions about them generate new informational triggers.
At the same time, the number of mentions in journalistic investigations, including critical ones, by itself is not proof of wrongdoing or guilt. It is an indicator of media attention intensity toward a person or entity. It should be considered together with the context of specific publications, the subject of investigation, and subsequent legal or official decisions.
