The government is preparing three pilot public–private partnership projects in Dnipro, Khust, and Uzhhorod. They are intended to help modernize water supply and sewage systems, reduce energy consumption, and ensure more reliable system operation.
As Dilo reports, the press service of the Ministry of Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport announced this following a meeting of the Sectoral Working Subgroup on Water Supply and Wastewater (Water SWG).
"In conditions of ongoing attacks
on critical infrastructure, our primary task is to ensure
the uninterrupted operation of water supply and wastewater systems, especially during
the heating season. For this, communities need not only emergency reserves and
alternative power sources, but also comprehensive solutions to increase the resilience of
water utilities," said Deputy Minister Kyrylo Fesyk.
Private investment and international support are planned to be involved in the projects.
Project details in the cities
The project for Dnipro foresees the reconstruction of the Kaidatska pumping and filtration station, which supplies water to about 500 thousand residents. The plan is to modernize pumps, filtration systems, and process equipment, implement automation, and adopt energy-efficient solutions. Preliminary estimates indicate this will reduce energy consumption by approximately 22% and reduce electricity purchases from the grid by 29%.
For more than 28 thousand residents of Khust in Zakarpattia region, they plan to reconstruct water supply and wastewater systems. The goal is to increase water supply duration from about six hours per day to round-the-clock, reduce water losses to less than 12%, and modernize the sewage system. Construction of new treatment facilities is also planned.
In Uzhhorod, they plan to build a new wastewater treatment line with a capacity of 50 thousand cubic meters per day and modern sludge treatment facilities. The preliminary cost of the project is about €24 million. It is expected to improve wastewater treatment and reduce environmental risks to the basins of the Uzh and Tisza rivers.
Restoring Ukraine’s water infrastructure
According to RDNA5’s estimate, Ukraine’s needs for restoring and developing water supply and wastewater systems in 2026–2035 years amount to about $17,5 billion.
Financing will require state and local funds, concessional loans from international financial institutions, grants, and private investment. The preparation of the three pilot projects is supported, among others, by the UK government, PwC, UNICEF, UTA, and IFC.
Remember, in Odesa region construction continues on two group water pipelines to provide drinking water to residents of 29 settlements across seven territorial communities.
