NMT-2027 may be cut to three subjects: what will be canceled and whether math will remain

Ukrainian graduates may have the national multi-subject test significantly simplified in 2027, reducing the number of subjects from four to three. At the same time, it is proposed to keep mathematics mandatory for all applicants and to cancel the option to choose a fourth discipline independently.

This was reported by Member of Parliament Yuliia Hryshyna.

The Verkhovna Rada is discussing possible changes to the structure of the national multi-subject test that Ukrainian graduates will take in 2027. One of the main proposals envisages reducing the number of examination disciplines.

Currently, the NMT format includes four subjects, three of which are mandatory, and the applicant chooses the fourth independently. However, MPs have proposed abandoning the elective subject and leaving a single set of disciplines for all applicants.

Possible changes were announced by Yuliia Hryshyna, chair of the Verkhovna Rada subcommittee on higher education. According to her, during discussions about the future testing format, most members of the parliamentary committee on education supported keeping mathematics among the mandatory subjects.

At the same time, a proposal arose to reduce the overall burden on graduates. The compromise was to reduce the number of disciplines from four to three without canceling mandatory testing in mathematics.

“We proposed a compromise option — to keep mathematics as a mandatory subject while simplifying the NMT structure: three subjects instead of four, effectively returning to the NMT structure used in 2022,” Hryshyna explained.

Under the proposed model, in 2027 all participants of the national multi-subject test will take Ukrainian language, mathematics, and the history of Ukraine. The new format does not provide for any additional elective subject.

This means that graduates will no longer be able to choose a fourth discipline according to their future specialty. In particular, this refers to biology, chemistry, physics, and foreign languages, which can currently be included in one’s set of tests.

Removing the fourth subject will be one of the biggest differences between the new format and the current admissions model. At the same time, Ukrainian language, mathematics, and the history of Ukraine will remain common for all applicants regardless of the chosen field of study.

The proposal essentially envisages returning to the NMT structure that was used in 2022. It is this three-subject model that deputies view as a possible compromise for the next admissions campaign.

However, the new rules have not yet been approved. Yuliia Hryshyna reported only on the proposed model, which still needs to be reviewed as part of preparations for the 2027 admissions campaign.

The final decision on the structure of NMT-2027 has yet to be made. If the proposal is approved, graduates will take three mandatory subjects instead of four but will lose the ability to choose an additional discipline independently.
