People's Deputy from “Simple People” and BPP

A rural lad from Poltava region who built his career on populist rhetoric as a "man of the people." Deputy of the VII and VIII convocations — initially from BPP, then non-affiliated. Founder of the “Party of Simple People of Serhiy Kaplin,” later the Social Democratic Party. In 2019, he ran for president. In 2020, unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Poltava.

Alimony, fights and threats to a judge

In February 2018, the Ministry of Justice debtor registry recorded Kaplin as a non-payer of alimony — despite his public denial. In February 2014, a criminal case was opened for alleged threats against a judge of the Zhovtnevy court of Poltava during a hearing involving Euromaidan activists. In 2017, the police detained Kaplin along with 15 party members after breaking into the Ministry of Justice — criminal case for hooliganism.
