Sasevych Oleksandr Mykhailovych

Ukrainian judge, scholar, and public official

Sasevych is a current member of the High Council of Justice (HCJ), to which he was elected in January 2023 through the quota of the 19th Congress of Judges of Ukraine. He was born in 1968 in the Lviv region, and in 1999 graduated from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv with a degree in law. He began his career as a military lawyer and participated as part of the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent in Kosovo. Later, he worked for a long time in senior legal positions in business structures (including the Lviv branch of Kyivstar PJSC), and in March 2012 he was appointed a judge of the Lviv District Administrative Court. He holds a Candidate of Legal Sciences degree and has consecutively served as a member of the Council of Judges of Ukraine for several convocations.

Journalistic investigations

Oleksandr Sasevych came under the scrutiny of public organizations and investigative journalists due to criticism concerning behind-the-scenes agreements in the judicial system. In particular, journalists from the Bihus.Info project documented his participation in a secret meeting of judges in 2018, where "desired" candidates for the High Council of Justice were pre-agreed and distributed ahead of the official vote at the Congress of Judges. Experts from the Anti-Corruption Centre noted that such actions violate principles of transparent competitive selection and judicial independence. In addition, analysts from the Prosud platform examined his declarations and drew attention to family property, particularly the ownership by his wife of commercial real estate, land plots, and several cars, the declared value of which in some cases raised questions among investigators.
