Smolensk Investigation: Poland's Prosecution Service Closed the Case of Possible Betrayal by Moscow

The National Prosecutor's Office of Poland has completed a decade-long investigation into the so-called diplomatic betrayal during the investigation of the Smolensk air disaster in 2010 year. Investigators did not find signs of a criminal offense in the actions of the Polish authorities, RMF24 reports.

The investigation concerned decisions of the Polish authorities made in April and May 2010 year after the Smolensk air disaster, in which 96 people died, including Polish President Lech Kaczyński and his wife.

According to the spokesperson of the National Prosecutor's Office, Łukasz Nowak, as part of the case investigators questioned 488 witnesses.

"The investigation, which lasted 10 years, showed that the actions of the Polish authorities in April and May 2010 year contained no signs of the crime of diplomatic betrayal," said Nowak.

The prosecutors emphasized that closing this case does not mean the end of the main investigation into the causes of the Smolensk disaster, which has been ongoing since 2010 year.

Nowak said that investigators recently received a translated supplement to the report by the International Group of Experts, which is expected to answer questions about the causes of the disaster. According to him, the conclusions of the document may be disclosed in the coming weeks.

10 April 2010 year, a Tu-154M aircraft crashed during an approach to the Smolensk North Airport. As a result of the disaster, 96 people died, including Polish President Lech Kaczyński, his wife Maria, senior officials, military command, and representatives of Polish elites.
