Childless Women — Into the Armed Forces? A Petition Appeared on the President’s Website Calling for the Mobilization of Ukrainian Women

On the official website of the President of Ukraine, an electronic petition has appeared calling for changes to the legislation and to equate the mobilization of childless women with the terms of conscription for men.

The petition author emphasizes that currently a significant portion of mobilized men remains at the front without clear terms of service and without the possibility of a full rotation. In her view, involving women who do not have children would allow a substantial strengthening of the Armed Forces and open the way to demobilization for those who have been fighting for a long time.

Among the main proposals of the author:

mobilize childless women aged from 18 to 60 years, who are physically fit;

grant deferments or exempt women who have children, are pregnant, or care for nonworking relatives from service;

provide women in the armed forces with proper conditions, medical care, and corresponding material support.

Note that according to Ukraine’s current legislation, registration for military service for women remains voluntary, with the exception of those who have medical or pharmaceutical education. The state leadership and military command have repeatedly emphasized that the issue of forced mobilization of women in Ukraine is not on the agenda.

For the petition to be considered by the President of Ukraine, it must gather 25 thousand signatures of citizens within three months from the moment of publication.
