A strong earthquake hit Colombia

Today, 10 in August, in the Pacific province of Chocó in Colombia an earthquake occurred. This is reported by Glavkom, citing Reuters.

“We have just experienced a strong earthquake in the Chocó department. We are concerned about possible aftershocks. Although the epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, in the capital,'s Kibdo there are casualties and significant building damage. We are already assessing the damage and will soon publish the first official report,” said Governor Nubia Córdoba-Curi of Chocó.

Risaralda Province Governor Juan Diego Patino reported that in the provincial capital Pereira, “some buildings sustained serious damage.” “What just happened is a very serious event. The footage is really shocking: there are casualties, façades of buildings collapsed,” he said.

The Geological Service of Colombia revised the earthquake magnitude upward—to 7,4. According to them, the earthquake’s origin lay at a depth of 96 km (60 miles), and not 79 km as initially reported.

Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management said it was maintaining contact with local authorities to assess possible damages. Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán stated that no significant damage was recorded in the capital.

Reuters reporters in Venezuela’s Tachira border state and in the city of Barquisimeto, located in the central-western part of the country, said the earthquake was felt there as well.

Incidentally, on the evening of 31 July near Naples, Italy, there was a strong earthquake of magnitude up to 4,7. Tremors were felt in Naples and surrounding towns, and in some parts of the city electricity temporarily disappeared and local trains were suspended.
