Iran continues to demand compensation from Ukraine for attacked ship

Iran says Ukraine must compensate for the damages from the strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, as it does not consider Kyiv's explanations about the accidental nature of the attack convincing. The statement was made by ISNA spokesman Esmaeil Baghei. He added that if Kyiv does not pay compensation, Tehran will "compensate the damages itself." The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson did not specify what exactly is meant by that formulation.

The position of Tehran is reported by the Iranian portal ISNA, which quoted Baghei's words. According to him, Iran believes that official statements by Ukrainian officials about the attack's fact are in themselves an admission of guilt and a basis for compensation.

"We spoke very clearly, quickly, and decisively about our position and published the statement. We still believe that we were not convinced by the Ukrainian side's assertions that this act was accidental," Baghei said.

According to the spokesperson, Tehran heard the Ukrainian side's explanations, but insists on its own position.

"We heard their words, but considering the acknowledgment by Ukrainian officials that such an attack was carried out, they must compensate for it. Of course, if they do not compensate, we will compensate ourselves," Baghei said.

Tensions escalated: long-range strikes in the Caspian

At the end of July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported successful long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea area. According to him, targets included a military ship and vessels transporting military cargo from Iran. In response, Tehran accused Ukraine of attacking its commercial vessel and reported the death of one crew member and another injured, stating the right to strike back.
