Russians struck Zaporizhstal with ballistic missiles: fatalities and injuries

As a result of a Russian ballistic strike on Metinvest’s civilian industrial facilities in Zaporizhzhia, 7 employees of the Zaporizhstal metallurgical plant were killed and another 21 person was wounded. The plant’s operations have been completely halted.

The ballistic strike occurred as workers were heading to shelters after air-raid alarms were sounded.

“Metinvest has gone through destruction and recovery after attacks before. But there is something one can never get used to—human casualties... Unfortunately, this terrorist attack took the lives of seven team members,” the company said.

The company is providing necessary aid to the wounded and supporting the families of the deceased workers. 11-12 August flags at Metinvest enterprises have been lowered as a sign of mourning for the fallen employees.

Shutdown of production capacities

The strike damaged energy units, infrastructure, and both the primary and auxiliary facilities of the coke and blast-furnace operations.

Due to the scale of the damage, Zaporizhstal’s operations have been completely stopped. Other company production sites in the region have been reduced to lower capacities. Emergency repair crews and specialists are currently inspecting equipment and assessing restoration timelines.

Recall that last year a massive Russian attack on Ukraine’s power grid in December 23 caused the total blackout of the Zaporizhstal metallurgical plant of the Metinvest group, leading to an emergency production shutdown.
