Russia preparing new strikes on Ukraine's energy sector: GUR details drone for attacks on power lines

This fall and winter Russia will again strike Ukraine's electricity, water and gas systems, and the occupiers have developed a specialized drone for attacks on power transmission towers.

This is stated in an interview with RBC-Ukraine with Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

Which targets are facing new strikes

According to military intelligence, Russia's set of targets remains unchanged. These are the defense-industrial complex, military facilities, energy infrastructure, the logistics system and gas stations.

At the same time, the occupiers strike not only military targets but also civilian infrastructure. The greatest concern is preparations for winter — that is when Ukraine is most vulnerable.

The most vulnerable elements are heating and electricity

In winter the main targets may be electricity and heating. Intelligence warns that these sectors could be hit first.

"For example, not long ago the Russians developed an unmanned aerial vehicle designed to strike power poles — power transmission lines. An explosive element is built into its wings that is capable of cutting through metal," Skibitskyi said.

According to Skibitskyi, "the targets will remain the same."

How intelligence tracks preparations for attacks

Ukrainian intelligence draws its conclusions based on analysis of the enemy's reconnaissance activities on the country's territory. They also use space assets for this.

Satellites monitor critical infrastructure across Ukraine, which makes it possible to detect Russian preparations for new strikes in advance.

Water and gas are also at risk

The risks concern not only electricity. Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal previously warned about threats to water supply — and that danger remains relevant.

"In addition, the gas transport system and gas production in Poltava and Kharkiv regions, which the enemy has already attacked before, could again be under threat this fall–winter," he added.
