The court sentenced the man who shot at the military recruitment center

In Odesa, a man who shot at two military recruitment center servicemen during an identity check was tried. The court reached a decision for the committed act.

Case details

According to the case materials, the incident occurred 9 January 2026 at about 12:00 in Kurortnyi Lane in Odesa. The recruitment center servicemen — a senior soldier and a junior sergeant — stopped the man to check documents, including his ID and military registration documents. However, he refused to show them, after which he produced an object resembling a firearm and fired at the servicemen at least three times.

As a result of the shooting, both servicemen sustained gunshot wounds. One was injured in the area of his right forearm, and the other in his right thigh. After committing the act, the man left the scene.

Later, during a search of the defendant’s place of residence, law enforcement officers found and seized firearms and ammunition. Among them were a WBP Midi Jack carbine caliber 7,62×39 mm, a revolver, several pistols STALKER and KUZEY, as well as cartridges of various calibers.

Forensics established that some of the seized weapons had been improvisedly modified. Also, some of the ammunition had been homemade, using, in particular, commercially manufactured casings.

The man’s actions were qualified under part 1 of article 114-1 and part 1 of article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. During the trial he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.

In turn, the victims stated that they had no claims against the defendant, since the material and moral damage inflicted on them had been compensated. In addition, they asked the court to impose a sentence that would include exemption from serving it.

Court decision

The Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa, evaluating the circumstances of the case, took into account that the man admitted guilt and repented. The court also considered that he had no prior criminal record, has a minor child and elderly parents. Compensation to the victims was additionally taken into account.

As a result of the proceedings, the court sentenced the defendant to five years’ imprisonment. At the same time, the man was released from actually serving this sentence, with a three-year probationary period set for him.

During this period the convict is obliged to periodically appear for registration with the probation authority, and also to inform about any change of residence address or place of work.

In addition, the court changed the preventive measure from detention to a personal obligation. The man was released directly in the courtroom. His time spent in custody from 10 January to 14 August 2026 was credited toward the term of the imposed sentence.

Regarding the weapons and ammunition seized during the search, the court decided to transfer them for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In addition, more than 69,5 thousand hryvnias spent on conducting expertise was recovered from the convict.

At the same time, the court verdict has not yet come into legal force. It can be appealed to the Odesa Court of Appeal within 30 days from the date of pronouncement.

As Novyny.LIVE reported, in Ivano-Frankivsk region a resident of Nyzhnii Bereziv was tried for leaking information about recruitment center locations in Viber. For that act, the court banned her from leaving Ukraine.
