Greece ready to discuss S-300 for Ukraine, but set a key condition

Ukraine and its allies are trying to reach an agreement with Greece on supplying a modernized version of the S-300 missiles, but Athens is demanding that its condition be met in return.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Forbes.

For a long time Ukraine’s air defense has been unable to fully repel Russia’s massed attacks due to a shortage of missiles for the Patriot. Kyiv is actively seeking alternative options, but obtaining them is also difficult.

Athens says it will not do so until it receives a full replacement.

One reason Greece cites for its decision is the tense security situation in the region. The country considers its air defense system an important part of deterring Turkey, and therefore, it says, fears being left without the S-300.

Athens would like to receive Patriots in return, but such a development is unlikely.

As Forbes explains, it is quite possible that not only this is holding Greece back from a deal with Ukraine.

Among other possible reasons is a partial deterioration of relations between Kyiv and Athens after a Ukrainian maritime drone was found on Greek territory. This occurred near the island of Lefkada.

Another possible factor influencing Greece’s position is its relations with Russia.

Thus, Athens may fear a negative reaction from the Kremlin if it transfers strategic systems to Ukraine.

“In addition, Moscow warned Greece about this, stating that Athens needs its permission to transfer these missile systems to any third party. And Russia does not want to allow Ukraine to acquire such strategic systems for obvious reasons,” the publication explains.
