The Crimean peninsula, which Russia has transformed into a huge military base during years of occupation, is being intensively prepared for defense against a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Fortifications are being hastily erected, hundreds of kilometers of beaches are being carved up — and the hysteria around Crimea’s quick liberation has reached unprecedented heights.

The residents of Yevpatoria were the first to report the “surprise.” According to them, the quay in the western part of the peninsula has been turned into a system of trenches, reinforced with wooden pallets, with places for shooting and shelter. Moreover, the local "authorities" justified such works by the need to "reconstruct".

"This is how they reinforce the seabed. This is not a reconstruction of the quay... Look, they’re drilling holes like crazy! And what season can you talk about in Crimea? How can a tourist get to the sea if here, 200 km, in such trenches..." That’s how it’s going, f***, all of Crimea is western," says the video author.

He showed long structures made of boards that really stretched for a long distance. Also in the video you can notice piles of sandbags piled up, which serve as barriers.

According to Vladyslav Nazarov, a representative of the Operational Command "South", the occupiers have dug long trenches to protect against a potential landing of Ukrainian troops on the peninsula.

11 March in an interview with the Russian state information agency RIA "Novosti" (under sanctions) the occupiers’ "head of Crimea" Sergei Aksyonov ("Goblin") confirmed the preparation for a landing.

"Everything is moving according to plan. And in fact we are acting nonstandardly there. The topic is such that it cannot be openly disclosed in public, but I can say that we, considering all battlefield experience, act nonstandardly, asymmetrically, one could say" – said the collaborator.

Aksyonov explained the decision to build defensive structures as follows: "He who is guarded is protected by God. And I have always taken the position: if you want peace, prepare for war. So the better we are prepared".

Crimeans are furious

A interlocutor for OBOZREVATEL in the occupied Yevpatoria says that local residents are not just not delighted with such a turn of events, but simply furious — including those Crimeans who welcomed the Russian occupiers in spring 2014, and those who remained loyal to Ukraine and await liberation.

"The mood is hard to put into words — all locals are enraged. Collaborators are primarily afraid of being held accountable for treason when the Ukrainian forces liberate Crimea. At the same time, they are angry at Russian troops, because access to beaches will now be closed and, most likely, the resort season will be ruined. Who would want to go on vacation and not be able to swim?" — says Olena.

And the Crimeans who are eagerly awaiting the peninsula’s return under Ukrainian control are not only upset about the closed sea, but also that the fortifications may hinder the landing of Ukrainian troops at least a little. "Just dig up what the occupiers did along the coastline," says a woman.

"We are waiting for our army!"

Panicking as well are residents of the Southern Coast of Crimea. They think that although the UBK (South Coast of Crimea) is unlikely to face a landing, but "rumors go around." In any case, they are convinced that "the season is already ruined": even the most ardent supporters of the occupation are unlikely to want to vacation where fighting could begin.

"If not a landing of Ukrainian troops, then the so-called "bavovna" could happen anywhere — in any point of the peninsula. Everyone understands this. And considering that many Russian soldiers are stationed in sanatoriums and holiday camps, they may get affected as well," Yalta resident Olga shared.

According to her, Crimeans understand that normal income from renting apartments and houses this year cannot be relied on. "Many locals are nervous because families of Russian officers have left from Yalta and Alushta — far away from sin. They consider this a "bad sign". I, of course, am glad about this," the woman laughs.

She also said that the hysteria around Crimea’s future liberation on the peninsula is "already known": "People are being frightened by the local authorities, unofficially they say that "the end of the world is coming soon". But please publish my words: "We, Ukrainians, very much want to be home and are waiting for our army!"

Nine years into the occupation, a significant number of people on the peninsula have not given up. They all believe that with the support of the international community Ukraine will soon return Crimea, and traitors will answer for their deeds.

When Crimea will be liberated

Officials have repeatedly openly stated about the future liberation of the Crimean peninsula. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is preparing morally, technically, militarily, forming brigades. And according to the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense Kyrylo Budanov, the liberation of Crimea could happen as early as this summer.

American General Ben Hodges, former commander of U.S. Forces Europe, believes that if Ukrainian forces have long-range missiles, they will likely be able to liberate Crimea from Russian occupiers by the end of summer 2023.

"We have to help Ukraine return Crimea. This year. We want this to happen, and we must provide everything necessary," Hodges said.

He believes the peninsula should be cut off from reliable Russian logistics routes (Kerch Bridge, land corridor through Mariupol and Melitopol), and then use a "broad range of long-range systems against vulnerable Russian objects and formations in Crimea".
