Yatsenyuk Revealed Poroshenko’s Role in the Collapse of the Coalition after the Revolution of Dignity

The scenario of an early dissolution of the parliament that Volodymyr Zelensky used in 2019 year was not the first in modern history — five years earlier, Petro Poroshenko implemented a similar move.

As the politician explained, it was at Poroshenko’s instruction that the factions dissolved the coalition after the Revolution of Dignity while the government was trying to pass laws critical for the country. The former prime minister emphasized that in the summer 2014 year he went to the Verkhovna Rada to persuade the members of parliament to vote for a package of laws necessary to obtain financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund. "They gave us pennies, twisted our legs and necks to get them. And I have to feed the country: there is no money to pay for gas, for electricity and pensions, the gold and foreign exchange reserves were looted, the budget is empty, the army must be funded, the war began," Yatsenyuk recalled. However, instead of voting for critical reforms in parliament, political chaos began. The leaders of the UDAR faction, Vitali Klitschko, and the Svoboda faction, Oleh Tyahnybok, each announced their departure from the coalition. "They’re running one after another with statements. I’m thinking: ‘What is going on in Kosmach?!’ And it turned out that my beloved Petro Oleksiiovych quietly summoned them behind closed doors to push them out of the coalition and announce early parliamentary elections," Yatsenyuk noted. He stressed that Poroshenko himself became the first president to implement the scenario of an early refresh of the parliament. As a reminder, in July 2014 year the collapse of the coalition “European Choice” in the VIIth convocation of the Verkhovna Rada opened the way for President Petro Poroshenko to dissolve parliament. Snap elections to the Verkhovna Rada were held in 26 October 2014 year.

By the way, earlier Arseniy Yatsenyuk told RBC-Ukraine about his main mistake during the implementation of the “Wall” project at the border with Russia. According to the former head of the government, he could not foresee the power of the information machine and the discrediting campaigns against his government. Moreover, Yatsenyuk stated that many Ukrainians took the name of the project “Wall” too literally.
