General Vovk Leads the Alternative Party: What Exactly He Proposes

General and former head of the Main Investigation Department of the SBU Vasyl Vovk named three changes that the Ukrainian state needs. They became the core of the program of the party he leads, “Alternative.”

In an interview with oboz.ua, Vovk also spoke about the principles on which “Alternative” should be built and named three areas in which the party plans to act differently from the current authorities.

“At a certain moment I understood a simple thing: if you constantly say that the state system works incorrectly, it is not enough to remain a commentator. It is necessary to offer an alternative model and take responsibility for it,” he explained.

According to the general, “Alternative” should not become just another political project built around one well-known surname.

“Ukrainian politics has been working in roughly the same way for many years: a famous surname appears, a political project is built around it, then people, ideology and program are sought. We want to build from principles, structure, team and a system of views,” Vovk said.

According to its leader, the ideological basis of “Alternative” should be conservative liberalism.

“At the center is a free person, their labor, property and dignity. The state should not be overly present in a citizen’s life, but where it is necessary, it should be strong: in matters of the army, the court, security, and setting the rules of the game,” he said.

Vovk defined the political force’s mission as the aim to “return the state to the people, break the system that feeds off power, and build an order that protects freedom.”

Vovk also named three areas in which the “Alternative” approach, according to him, would differ from the current authorities’ politics.

First — long-term strategic planning.

Second — strict personal responsibility of officials, first and foremost for corruption during the war and for decisions that affect the state’s defense capability.

The third priority Vovk named is an honest conversation between the authorities and society about key questions of the war and the country’s future.

As a reminder, in the same interview Vasyl Vovk described a possible scenario for stopping hostilities under the principle “we stand where we stand,” followed by a transition to prolonged peace negotiations. He stressed that such a scenario should not imply a legal renunciation by Ukraine of the occupied territories.
