Lyudmyla Denysova: Russia is hastily removing exhibits from Crimean museums

Ukrainian MP Lyudmyla Denysova 27 during a speech at the General Assembly of the PA E MED on the fight against illegal use of cultural heritage in the region, stated that Russia is removing valuable exhibits from Crimean museums. On the eve of, Denysova disclosed information about the removal to the Russian Hermitage of collections from Crimea, including from Chersonesus Taurica, Sudak, and the Tavrida Central Museum in Simferopol. After that, 22 in October, on the site of Chersonesus Taurica and in Russian media appeared a refutation of this information, however the Hermitage itself announced an exhibition with Crimean exhibits.“I would like to inform all present that it was announced that an exhibition at the Hermitage, ‘On the Land of the Griffin. Classical archaeology of the Hermitage in Crimea’ would run from 24 October 2015 of the year to 24 January 2016 of the year, which includes items from the collection of the East Crimean Historical-Cultural Museum-Reserve. This information is still posted on the Hermitage’s site,” Denysova said.She emphasized that there are no objections to cooperation in excavations at Chersonesus, the joint creation of a Byzantine exhibition, and joint research. “However, the voiced information indicates not just cooperation, but confirms the fact of removing valuable exhibits from Crimea,” she added.Additionally, Denysova expressed particular concern over an incident that occurred on the night of 16 to 17 November this year in Sudak, where, according to media reports, part of the ancient Genoese fortress tower was destroyed.“Our country strongly condemns the barbaric capture and looting by the Russian Federation of Ukraine’s cultural, material, spiritual, and historical values,” Denysova stressed.
