Key Enemy for the Russian Federation: Expert Explained Why Russia Struck the SBU Building

The strike 4 in September can be perceived as a kind of assessment of the SBU's work. This is written by political scientist Oleksiy Kurpas. “The SBU and Poklad are delivering results for Ukraine. Russia understands very well where the most painful blows come from. It understands who exposes its agents. Who dismantles its FSB networks. Who thwarts diversions. Who conducts unique operations. Putin always shows very precisely whom he fears. And today the SBU is certainly on one of the leading positions in this list,” the expert writes. Kurpas emphasizes that the SBU's counterintelligence work is particularly effective. “The scale of the Service's counterintelligence work is colossal. Since 2022 year, the SBU has uncovered 150 enemy intelligence networks, which included 648 individuals. Since the very beginning of 2026 year, another 20 networks and 81 their participants have been detected. For any foreign intelligence service, these are very painful numbers. Because an agent network is not created in one day. It involves people, money, legends, and communication channels. And when SBU counterintelligence shuts down the entire network, the FSB loses not just a few agents. It loses the infrastructure that sometimes took years to build,” the political scientist writes. According to him, the enemy works against the SBU by all available methods. “From information attacks to attempts at physical liquidation. The special services have a very simple criterion of effectiveness. If the opponent spends enormous resources to find you, discredit you, neutralize you, or destroy you, it means you are creating a real problem for him. This is precisely how the events of 4 September should be interpreted,” Kurpas concludes. As a reminder, according to SBU materials, more than 4 thousand cases have been opened for treason, more than 9 thousand for collaboration, and more than 100 for espionage.
