“Cynical lies to justify killings”: Moldova’s MFA responded to Russia’s strike on the Starokozache border checkpoint

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova said that Russia deliberately attacked the Tudora–Starokozache border checkpoint and is attempting to justify the strike with claims of supposedly transporting military cargo through Moldova to Ukraine.

At the Moldovan MFA, statements about “transporting military cargo” were rejected, stressing that weapons are not transported through the country to Ukraine.

“This is a false and completely unfounded assertion. Through the territory of the Republic of Moldova weapons are not transported to Ukraine — neither via the Tudora–Starokozache checkpoint nor via any other,” the ministry emphasized.

They added that the “attempt to justify the killing of peaceful people with statements about ‘weapons transport’ is cynical and unacceptable.” In the Moldovan MFA, the strike was strongly condemned, and attempts to justify it with lies and disinformation were rejected.

Late at night on 9 September, Russian forces struck the Starokozache checkpoint, causing a fire. Odesa regional military administration head Oleksandr (Oleh) Kipar reported that two people near the checkpoint were killed. There are also injuries, including a Moldovan citizen.
