Person information
Ukrainian military figure, Major General
Since August 31, 2026, Chenchyk has been serving as the acting Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 837/2026. He was born on November 15, 1972, in the urban-type settlement of Katerynopil in Cherkasy Oblast. He obtained three higher education degrees (from the Lviv Polytechnic, the Academy of Border Troops, and Kharkiv National Pedagogical University). He began military service in border guard bodies in 1994. He progressed from an officer in an airborne brigade to head of the Mostyska and Mukachevo border detachments of the Western Regional Department of the SBGS. From September 2019 to August 2026, he continuously served as deputy head of the SBGS, and in April 2022 he received the rank of Major General.
Long-term curator of operational activities and internal security of the agency
The official took over the agency as the second acting leader in 2026 amid a major corruption scandal involving the former head of the SBGS, Serhiy Deineko, whom the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) suspect of systematically receiving bribes for cigarette smuggling into the EU. Although Vadym Chenchyk currently has no official status as a suspect or defendant in criminal cases, his name has been repeatedly mentioned in public scandals and investigations by civil activists. In particular, in investigations by human rights defender Ivan Sprynskyi, Chenchyk was named as one of the representatives of the old leadership hierarchy responsible for the operational unit of the SBGS for years, during which shadow schemes thrived at the customs posts "Solomonovo" and "Uzhhorod".
