FBI agent on payroll, aircraft purchase through Kazakhstan, and 2 billion UAH assets seized in Ukraine
In January 2023, former top FBI agent Charles McGonigal was detained in New York for connections with Deripaska – he was paid for intelligence work. Despite sanctions, in 2023 Deripaska purchased a new aircraft for $36 million through Kazakhstan. In May 2024, the US imposed new sanctions on a network of companies that reportedly helped Deripaska access frozen assets worth $1.5 billion in the West. In January 2025, assets worth over 2 billion UAH were seized in Ukraine – almost 500 thousand tons of bauxite and alumina. The State Property Fund of Ukraine transferred 32 million UAH of Deripaska's sanctioned funds to the state budget in 2024. He publicly criticizes Putin – analysts interpret this as an attempt to distance himself from the regime for a possible partial lifting of Western sanctions.
