Klimkin's diplomatic career began in 1994. Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany (2012–2014). Minister of Foreign Affairs (2014–2019) — during a critical period for Ukraine: the annexation of Crimea, Minsk negotiations, signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. After resignation — co-founder of an analytical center, regular commentator on Radio NV and international platforms concerning hybrid threats and Euro-Atlantic integration. Member of the Board of the International Renaissance Foundation.
Arrest in absentia in Moscow and charges by Russia for "war crimes"
On July 2, 2024, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow arrested Klimkin in absentia under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("use of prohibited means and methods of warfare"). In April 2024, the Investigative Committee of Russia filed charges against him together with Groysman and Stets — allegedly for "supporting the war in Donbas."
