In occupied Oleshkys in the Kherson region the food situation has become critical — there are confirmed cases where people, driven by hunger, have begun eating dogs. The last time food was delivered to the city was 26 May; since then no supply attempts have been successful.

This was reported by the head of the Oleshkys City Military Administration, Tetiana Hasanenko.

According to her, until a week ago she denied reports that locals were forced to eat dogs, but a few days ago she received confirmation directly from a person who is in the occupied city.

“There is actually nothing to eat. The situation is worsening not just by the day, it is worsening by the hour,” Hasanenko said.

She emphasized that the food problem affects virtually all residents of the city. Situations where some families have enough food while others starve, she said, do not exist — everyone who remains in Oleshkys is suffering from the lack of food.

The last successful delivery of food to the city took place on 26 May. Since then it has not been possible to deliver provisions there.

At the same time, people remain under the constant threat of hostilities. Hasanenko describes the civilians’ situation as virtually hopeless: they risk either dying from lack of food or being killed by shelling and drone strikes.

Currently about 2 thousand people remain directly in Oleshkys. Before the full-scale invasion the city had approximately 24 thousand residents.

Overall, the Oleshkys community numbered about 40 thousand residents before the war and consisted of the city and another 12 settlements. According to the head of the military administration, five settlements in the community have been completely destroyed, and three more are roughly 80% ruined.

Now about 6 thousand people remain in Oleshkys and the surrounding villages, among them 182 child.
