The NBU will not yet change the design of 1- and 2-hryvnia coins

The National Bank will not yet change the design of coins worth 1 and 2 hryvnias; the idea has not been abandoned, and they plan to pursue it after the country’s situation stabilizes, since work on the redesign had already been underway. At the same time, the National Bank periodically introduces new commemorative coins. The question of updating the coin designs arose due to numerous Ukrainian appeals complaining that coins with denominations 1 and 2 hryvnias are too similar to each other, according to the Center for Economic Strategy with reference to the NBU Deputy Chairman Oleksiy Shabana. A special working group was created at the National Bank, and discussions on possible changes to the design of one or both coins were initiated. Organizations and associations of people with disabilities were involved in the discussions as well, noting the difficulty in distinguishing these coins. “Fakty” reported that among the coins in circulation, the largest nominal is 1 hryvnias, and the smallest is 10 hryvnias (4,8% and 2,5% of the total in circulation, respectively). Smaller denominations are gradually being withdrawn from circulation, except for coins of 50 kopecks, which maintain steady demand, particularly from the trade and service sectors. Their share of the total in circulation is 9,1%.
