Underground shelters may appear on routes to schools in frontline regions

Ukraine has launched the “Safe School Route” initiative. It involves installing mobile shelters in frontline regions.

This was reported by Deputy Head of the President’s Office Viktor Mykyta.

What is known about the initiative

The official said they plan to install 840 mobile shelters in 49 communities. Funds for installing the shelters will be provided by rear regions.

About a thousand communities and more than 10 regions, where the situation is currently relatively safe, will form a financial support package to install 840 mobile shelters in 49 communities that, despite attacks by KABs and terrorists’ drones, provide in-person or mixed forms of education for children,

– the Deputy Head of the President’s Office reported.

He also called the installation of mobile shelters a fundamental step in building a new security component for children and ensuring the educational process in frontline regions.

How they cared for students’ safety last year

Ukraine continues to build underground schools and shelters in frontline and border regions.

Last year there was talk of more than 139 underground schools and several dozen vocational education institutions.

Back then, the first underground kindergarten began construction in the Pisochyn community in the Kharkiv region.

In 2025, the state budget allocated 11,2 billion hryvnias for the construction of underground schools. Funds were also allocated from local budgets.

Overall, last year the state invested in the construction and equipping of: 96 underground school-shelters, 70 school buses, 120 modern spaces, 103 school kitchens and cafeterias, and 963 equipped "Defense of Ukraine" centers.
