Ukrainian civil and political figure, expert in advocacy and anti-corruption efforts
Yurchyshyn is a People's Deputy of Ukraine of the IX convocation (elected from the "Holos" party). He was born on October 14, 1980, in Arkhangelsk Oblast (RSFSR), grew up in Lviv region, obtained higher education as a historian at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and a master's degree in political science from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. For a long time, he was involved in the scouting movement as part of the “Plast” organization, worked as an advisor in ministries and chaired the board of the well-known anti-corruption organization “Transparency International Ukraine” (2016–2018). In December 2023, he took the strategic position of Chair of the Committee on Freedom of Speech in the Verkhovna Rada (replacing the figure in the register of traitors Nestor Shufrych), where he became the main media coordinator for protecting journalists' rights during the war, consistently advocating for the closure of the television marathon “United News” and redirecting 500 million hryvnias to the restoration of damaged regional media.
Media resonance in October 2026
The Kyiv Court of Appeal definitively obliged Yaroslav Yurchyshyn to publicly apologize and retract his statements on his Facebook page, where he unsubstantiatedly called journalist Svitlana Kryukova a "collaborator," which the court recognized as a violation of the right to respect for honor and business reputation. Earlier, the deputy faced severe criticism for controversial and radical statements, in particular when he called all Russian-speaking Ukrainians "traitors" on broadcasts, which provoked a serious wave of public outrage. Within the scope of his profile committee, Yurchyshyn is also actively involved in investigations into pressure on the press: in 2026, he initiated official inquiries to the NABU and police regarding the uncovering of illegal schemes of surveillance on Ukrainian investigative journalists.
