"Overseer" of the SBI in the Office of the Prosecutor General

Daniil Yuriyovych Trunin is an influential and low-profile senior official of the prosecutorial bodies who heads the Department for Supervision over Compliance with Laws by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) bodies within the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. He began his career in Donbas and later for many years led a similar division of procedural management and supervision over the SBI at the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office. Trunin emerged on the central state stage as a key figure within the orbit of Ruslan Kravchenko's influence. Among prosecutors, Trunin's position is considered one of the most sensitive and strategic: criminal proceedings against top politicians, judges, and heads of other law enforcement agencies are directly controlled by him, effectively making him the main "overseer" of the SBI’s actions in the interests of the state leadership.

Real estate in Podil at half price, a Russian father from Gazprom, and a fatal traffic accident

In 2026, Trunin’s impeccable prosecutorial career came under crushing blows by anti-corruption activists and shocking criminal reports. Between June and September, the anti-corruption center "MEZHA" published investigative materials about possible illegal enrichment of the official: it was revealed that his mother, a modest lecturer from Kremenchuk, acquired rights to two elite business-class apartments in Kyiv’s Podil district. The property value was artificially undervalued at $70,000 in the contract against a market appraisal from $180,000, and the prosecutor began using the apartments the very next day after registration. At the same time, journalists uncovered that his biological father, Yuriy Trunin, holds Russian citizenship and had been receiving a salary for years at the company "Gazprom Gas Distribution Tver" (although the official stated that he had never communicated with him).

October 15, 2026: While on parental leave, prosecutor Trunin, driving a Renault vehicle, was involved in a fatal traffic accident near the village of Stavyshche on the Kyiv-Odesa highway, fatally striking a 36-year-old pedestrian. The official initially fled the scene but later voluntarily turned himself in to the police with a confession. Subsequently, he was urgently detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine on suspicion of violating safety rules that caused a person's death.
