The National Bank of Ukraine is the country's central bank, responsible for monetary policy, money circulation, currency regulation, and supervision of the banking system. Founded in 1991, the NBU is an independent institution accountable to the Verkhovna Rada.
During the years of independence, it has undertaken several waves of banking sector cleanup — notably the large-scale 2014–2017 period, during which more than 90 banks lost their licenses. The NBU also implemented inflation targeting, moved to a floating exchange rate of the hryvnia, and coordinates currency policy amid the full-scale war with Russia.
