The discussion was opened by former British prime minister David Cameron — the official during whose term the referendum on the UK’s exit from the EU took place — and Robert Gates, the former US secretary of defense. The event is moderated by American political analyst Fareed Zakaria.

Participants discussed the relationship between newly elected US president Donald Trump and Russia and whether he would be able to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin. This raised certain questions among the political establishment present, which largely holds the view that attempts to “sit down and talk with Putin” are foolish.

Attendees also agreed that Ukraine should not be traded for Syria, and that Trump’s inner circle would still be able to restrain him if he began to drastically change his policy toward Russia.
